COVID-19 in Wastewater

As of July 1st, 2023, the Alberta COVID-19 wastewater monitoring program has been transitioned from the University of Calgary and University of Alberta to Alberta Health (AH) and Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL). The CHI Tracker will continue to be a resource for Albertans, as we will share the COVID-19 wastewater monitoring data generated by AH and APL.

The data below begins on July 1, 2023, the first date of data provided by AH and APL. You can view historical COVID-19 wastewater data from the university labs on the Alberta tab.

Data prior to July 2023 generated by the university labs will not be directly comparable to data generated from July 2023 onward, which APL is reporting as a population standardized quantity of COVID-19 viral genomes. Population standardization is calculated by estimating the population within the sewershed area surrounding each treatment plant and dividing the quantity of SARS CoV-2 viral genomes by this population.
